Abstractor and Coder
Summary/Objective:
- Performs a variety of tasks associated with collection and abstraction of medical records from hospitals, radiation oncology, and pathology departments and physician offices.
- Knowledge of basic human/microscopic anatomy, classification of tumors, and staging systems.
- Knowledge of the difference between benign, uncertain potential, and malignant tumor.
- Understands the diagnostic procedures used to establish the diagnosis and access the extent of disease to determine and code primary site(s), histological type, stage of disease, sites of metastases and treatment given.
- Codes and enters data into cancer registry software according to North Carolina Central Cancer Registry (NCCCR) regulations.
Essential Functions:
- Identifies and codes the primary site of cancer, with the understanding of the potential for spread to other organs, tissues, and the lymphatic drainage system for all the major organs of the body.
- Interprets therapy reports such as surgical, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, immunotherapy, and other new and experimental therapy administered for the definitive treatment of cancer.
- Abstracts within six (6) months of diagnosis of presentation as required by NCCCR.
- Maintains monthly incomplete list.
- Participates in development and monitoring of quality control activities.
- Must be adaptable and flexible in a changing work environment that requires continuous upgrading of skills. Must have a demonstrated ability to function independently with little supervision.
Qualifications:
- Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification.

Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a Cancer Registry abstracting position.
Prefer experience in EPIC and CRStar
Education:
- Required: Associate degree
- Preferred: Associate or Bachelor in NCRA Accredited Degree program
